GARIFUNA DAY STREET FESTIVAL 2008
Saturday, April 12, 2008
SPONSORSHIP REQUEST

The Garifuna Day Street Festival, produced on the streets of Los Angeles since April 2001 have become a major event for the urban community of Los Angeles, drawing an estimated crowd of 2,500 to 3,000.  Free to the public, the festival commemorates the amazing story of the largest black ethnic group in Central America that survive the threat of slavery, death and exile.

The commemoration’s theme this year is “Garifuna Bicentennial +10 – Historic Past – Brilliant Future.” In keeping with the theme under the framework of the African Heritage Month in Honduras, the street festival will showcase the unique culture of the Garifuna, whom were captured to be slaves but were never enslaved.

For years the Garifuna fought European aggression, only to eventually succumb to the British Army. Giving a choice of slavery or death, the Garifuna chose death.  In fear of causing genocide the British chose to exile the Garifuna from their homeland of St Vincent to the island of Rhoatan Honduras.  The Garifuna then migrated to other countries including Nicaragua, Guatemala, Belize and eventually the United States.

We are offering you the opportunity to share and celebrate the successful and true story of an African Diaspora with the citizens of Los Angeles by sponsoring this event. The commemoration will feature a series of activities designed as a genuine expression of the Garífunas idiosyncrasy and culture.

Activities are centered issues that are a threat to the survival of the Garifuna Nation.  In 2007 we addressed the issue of  HIV, a severe epidemic that continue to spread among the communities of Garifuna.  The issue of Domestic Violence will be the main topic for the 2008 Festival.  The street festival plans to bring awareness and education to those who attend with the hope they will share with their family and friends still living in the countries of Belize, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

To do this effectively we need help. We realize it is short notice however we are seeking assistance in the form of sponsorship.  Below you will find 3 sponsorship packages we are offering.
